Because of its wide mainstream acceptance, Google has traditionally been the primary target when it comes to search engine optimization (SEO). Despite the release of Microsoft’s Bing search engine last year, this practice has changed very little.

In a recent article from Business Insider, Daniel Ruby, research director of SEO firm Chitika said Microsoft may be able dethrone Google. In order for this to happen, though, Microsoft has to take three specific actions.

First, Ruby says that Microsoft should begin pushing Bing as the primary search engine for Internet Explorer. Statistics have shown that only 10.3 percent of IE users also use Bing as their default search engine. Because IE is owned by Microsoft, this could be a great way to push Bing, says Ruby.

Apple and Google haven’t been on the best terms as of late. Ruby says that Microsoft should take advantage of this and secure a deal that would establish Bing as the primary search provider for the iPhone and iPad.

Finally, statistics have found that Bing users are more likely to click ads, making them more valuable to web masters. This advantage should similarly be stressed, says Ruby.

Marketing firm Razorfish recently predicted Google would lose some of its search market dominance in 2010. The partnership between Yahoo and Bing is expected to draw some attention away from Google, says Razorfish.
